Is Tokyo a good Next.js portfolio template?

Tokyo is a $19 personal portfolio template from ib-themes that ships as two projects, one for Next.js and one for plain React. It works like a digital business card: a sidebar menu switches between home, about, services, portfolio, news and contact. Buyers rate it 4.97 out of 5 from 30 reviews, and it has 612 sales. ThemeForest lists the last update on 12 September 2025.

Best for: Designers, developers, photographers and freelancers who want a minimal one-screen personal site

The Tokyo Next.js portfolio template is a personal portfolio and vCard template from ib-themes. It costs $19 and has 612 sales. In addition, buyers rate it 4.97 out of 5 from 30 reviews. The download holds two separate projects, one for Next.js and one for plain React.

A digital business card that fits one screen

Tokyo does not scroll like a long landing page. Instead, a sidebar on the left switches between Home, About, Service, Portfolio, News and Contact. The home screen shows a round portrait, a name, a typed job title and social icons. As a result, visitors see who you are at once. On phones, the sidebar turns into a top bar with a menu button.

Who the Tokyo Next.js portfolio template suits

The author names designers, developers, writers, instructors, photographers, freelancers and engineers. In other words, it is for one person showing their work. The portfolio section opens projects in popups, and it can play YouTube and Vimeo videos. Moreover, a working contact form confirms each message with a toast notification. So a freelancer gets a complete personal site without a back end.

Light and dark versions

Tokyo comes in light and dark versions, with a switcher since version 2.0. Besides that, the current feature list mentions a tooltip mouse-move animation. The 2021 changelog also lists an RTL version and a magic cursor effect, but the current feature list does not repeat them. The design is minimal, black and white, and relies on clean typography. Therefore your photos and projects carry the color.

Updates and Next.js version

ThemeForest shows the last update on 12 September 2025. However, the newest changelog entry is version 2.5 from 1 October 2024. That release moved the project to the Next.js 14 App Directory. So expect Next.js 14 code, not Next.js 16. Note that the demo images are not in the download either.

Key features:

  • Separate Next.js and React projects in one download
  • One-screen vCard layout with sidebar navigation
  • Light and dark versions with a switcher
  • Portfolio popups with YouTube and Vimeo video
  • Working contact form with toast notifications
  • Typed job title and tooltip mouse-move animation
  • Fully responsive layout
