What the Divi Builder plugin does
The plugin adds the Divi Visual Builder to your site. You drag modules onto the page, edit text in place and see each change at once. In addition, Elegant Themes says the plugin gives you the Divi Theme Builder, even on a third-party theme. That means you can also design headers, footers and post templates.

According to Elegant Themes, the plugin offers the same pre-built templates and modules as the Divi theme. Plugin vs the Divi theme
Both products share the same builder. The difference is where the builder lives. The Divi theme has the builder built in, together with its own theme options. The plugin, on the other hand, adds the builder on top of a theme you already use.
Elegant Themes gives clear advice here. For a new website, the Divi theme is often the better choice. For a site with a theme you like, the plugin is the better option.

Who should use the Divi Builder plugin
The plugin makes sense in a few real cases. For example, you run a theme with a custom shop or booking layout, and you only want better landing pages. Or a client insists on keeping a light theme such as Astra. In both cases, the plugin adds Divi without a theme switch.

Divi 4, Divi 5 and the plugin today
Here is what we found in the public changelog. The plugin still follows the Divi 4 line, from version 4.27.7 to 4.27.9. In contrast, Divi 5 launched on February 26, 2026, and it installs as a theme under Appearance, Themes. We found no Divi 5 build of the plugin in the changelog or the help center.
The Divi 4 line still gets real fixes. For instance, version 4.27.8 fixed Theme Builder shop templates for WooCommerce 11.0 and the Divi block editor in WordPress 7.1. Version 4.27.7 closed five security issues in May 2026. Moreover, Elegant Themes supports Divi 4 for at least 12 months after the Divi 5 launch, so at least until February 2027.
