Is the Extra WordPress theme still worth using in 2026?
Extra is the magazine theme from Elegant Themes. It adds a Category Builder, a built-in review system and seven post formats on top of the Divi Builder. You do not buy it alone: it comes with every Divi membership, from $89 per year or $249 once. Version 4.27.9 shipped on September 18, 2026.
Best for: bloggers, review sites and small news publishers who already pay for Divi and want a ready magazine layout
The Extra WordPress theme is the magazine theme from Elegant Themes, the company behind Divi. It runs on the Divi Builder and adds tools for blogs and news sites. Elegant Themes released version 4.27.9 on September 18, 2026.
What the Extra WordPress theme is built for
Elegant Themes calls Extra the counterpart to Divi. Divi focuses on the page, while Extra focuses on the post feed. So the theme suits blogs, review sites and online magazines that publish every day.
Our screenshots show the official demo on desktop, tablet and mobile. You can see color-coded category blocks, a featured slider and review scores on the posts. However, the demo content is old: the posts date from 2015, and the sidebar still shows a Google+ button.
The Category Builder: Divi for home and category pages
The biggest reason to pick Extra is the Category Builder. It brings the drag-and-drop Divi Builder to your home page and to each category archive. As a result, every category can get its own layout instead of a plain list.
Extra ships post modules for this job. For example, you get Posts, Posts Carousel, Featured Posts Slider, Tabbed Posts, Blog Feed and a masonry Blog Feed. In addition, the product page lists code and advertisement modules for ad slots.
You build these layouts under Extra, then Category Builder in the dashboard. Then you choose which categories use each layout and whether a sidebar shows.
Reviews, ratings and post formats in one theme
Extra has its own review system. You can add a product review to any post, with a score breakdown. Recent reviews then appear in a widget, and the scores show up in post feeds.
Readers can also rate your posts with stars. Moreover, the theme supports seven post formats: video, gallery, map, quote, link, audio and text. Each format gets a layout that fits its content.
For navigation, Extra includes mega menus that show recent or featured posts. There are three menu locations, a fixed header and a back-to-top button. Finally, posts get share buttons, related articles and author boxes.
WooCommerce, projects and the Divi Builder
Extra restyles the WooCommerce storefront to match the magazine design. It also adds a Projects post type, so you can show a portfolio next to your articles.
Every post and page can use the Divi Builder, which is built into the theme. Therefore you do not need the separate Divi Builder plugin with Extra. Elegant Themes says the same in its help center.
Extra and Divi 5: what the changelog shows
Divi 5 launched publicly on February 26, 2026, and Elegant Themes now ships all new features there. In contrast, the Extra changelog still follows the Divi 4 line, from 4.27.7 to 4.27.9.
Those updates matter, though. Version 4.27.8 fixed Theme Builder shop templates for WooCommerce 11.0 and the Divi block editor in WordPress 7.1. Version 4.27.7 closed five security issues in May 2026. Meanwhile, the Divi theme got a Divi 5 opt-in in February, but Extra’s changelog has no such entry.
Elegant Themes supports Divi 4 for at least 12 months after the Divi 5 release, so at least until February 2027. Extra follows that Divi 4 line. As a result, it is safe for now, but new features do not land there.
Extra WordPress theme pricing
You cannot buy Extra on its own. Instead, it comes with the Divi membership, which covers Divi, Extra, Bloom, Monarch and the Divi Builder plugin. The yearly plan costs $89, while lifetime access costs $249 once. Both plans allow unlimited sites, and Elegant Themes gives a 30-day refund.
Divi Pro costs $277 per year and adds Divi AI, Divi Cloud, VIP support and Teams. However, a magazine site does not need Pro to use Extra. Our Divi pricing guide compares the plans in detail.
