Looking for lightweight WordPress themes that keep your site fast? We did not copy vendor claims. Instead, on 14 October 2026 we loaded the official WordPress.org preview of nine popular free themes. Each preview page ran five times in a clean browser, and we kept the median. Here are the 9 best lightweight WordPress themes, grouped by type and listed from the lightest page in each group.

All nine loaded less than 350 KB. By contrast, Twenty Twenty-Four, the 2024 default theme, loaded 974 KB on the same preview. The newer Twenty Twenty-Five loaded 119 KB, so five of the nine beat even that. Also, every theme here is free on WordPress.org, and each one links to our full review.

How we measured these lightweight WordPress themes

Every theme on WordPress.org has a public preview at wp-themes.com. So, each preview shows the same sample posts, which makes a fair test. We opened each page in Chromium at 1366 pixels wide with the cache off. Then we counted the requests and the bytes sent over the network.

However, a preview is not your site. Plugins, images and your host add their own weight. Still, the theme sets the floor, and a light floor leaves room for the rest.

What is the fastest WordPress theme?

In our test, Hello Elementor and GeneratePress loaded the lightest pages, at 17 KB and 23 KB. Also, both finished loading first on our test machine. However, Hello needs Elementor to build the layout. So, GeneratePress is the fastest pick that works on its own. Kadence and Blocksy came next, both under 50 KB.

The lightest WordPress themes in our test

First, these four loaded less than 50 KB each. Also, none of them loaded a web font or an image on the preview.

Hello from Elementor loaded the lightest page in our test: 17 KB in 5 requests. Its CSS and JavaScript added up to only 10 KB. However, Hello is a blank canvas for Elementor, and the builder adds its own files. The theme runs on 1,000,000+ sites with a 4.2 rating from 129 reviews. Version 3.5.1 shipped on 25 August 2026.

GeneratePress is the lightest theme here that works without a page builder. Its preview loaded 23 KB in just 4 requests, with one 5 KB stylesheet. Moreover, it holds a 4.9 rating from 1,427 reviews and runs on 500,000+ sites. However, the last free release, 3.6.1, dates from 1 December 2025. GP Premium costs $59 per year.

Kadence loaded 42 KB in 7 requests on the same preview. Also, it loaded no web fonts and no images there. The free version includes a drag-and-drop header builder and global color palettes. Kadence holds a 4.9 rating from 455 reviews on 500,000+ sites. Version 1.5.2 shipped on 24 July 2026.

Blocksy stayed just as lean, with 44 KB in 5 requests. Moreover, it holds a perfect 5.0 rating from 873 reviews on WordPress.org. The free version already includes a header builder and built-in WooCommerce support. In addition, it got the newest update here, version 2.1.59 on 8 October 2026. Blocksy Pro costs $69 per year.

Popular lightweight themes with starter content

Next, these two loaded more bytes, but mostly photos and fonts. Their own code stayed under 25 KB.

Astra loaded 196 KB in 20 requests. However, most of that weight came from starter photos and web fonts. Its own CSS and JavaScript added up to only 23 KB. Astra runs on 1,000,000+ sites and holds a 4.9 rating from 6,539 reviews. Version 4.14.0 shipped on 24 September 2026, and Astra Pro costs $69 per year.

Neve from Themeisle loaded 300 KB in 14 requests. Again, starter images (185 KB) and fonts (71 KB) made up most of it. Its CSS and JavaScript were only 21 KB, close to Astra. Neve holds a 4.7 rating from 1,283 reviews on 200,000+ sites. Version 4.2.16 shipped on 7 October 2026.

Lightweight WooCommerce themes

Finally, three themes built with shops in mind. Each one still loaded far less than Twenty Twenty-Four, the 2024 default theme.

Botiga from aThemes is made for WooCommerce and loaded 91 KB in 7 requests. It loaded no web fonts or images on the preview. However, it loads jQuery, so its scripts weighed 52 KB. Botiga holds a 4.9 rating from 164 reviews, and version 2.5.0 shipped on 1 October 2026. Botiga Pro costs $63 per year in the current 20% sale, normally $79.

Storefront is the free theme that WooCommerce builds itself. It loaded 243 KB in 14 requests. However, 78 KB of that was one Font Awesome icon font. Its CSS and JavaScript stayed at 35 KB. Storefront holds a 4.5 rating from 155 reviews, but its last release, 4.6.2, dates from 9 December 2025.

OceanWP was the heaviest of the nine, with 341 KB in 21 requests. For example, it loaded 14 scripts, jQuery among them, and a 155 KB icon font. In return, the free version adds quick view, an off-canvas filter and a floating add-to-cart bar. OceanWP holds a 4.9 rating from 5,715 reviews on 400,000+ sites. Version 4.2.7 shipped on 6 October 2026.

How to choose a lightweight WordPress theme

First, look at the theme code, not only the total page weight. For example, Astra and Neve loaded more bytes than Botiga, but mostly photos and fonts. Second, check for jQuery and icon fonts, since both add weight to every page. Third, check the last update, because an old release misses fixes. Finally, compare the Pro price only after the free version fits.
